In recent years, there has been a growing awareness among people about the importance of gratitude in our lives. People who practice it, speak volumes about its power to bring transformative change. Even research studies have found that practicing gratitude can have profound effects on our mental and emotional health. In fact, if you make it into a daily habit, it could also lead to better physical health.

So, what exactly do people mean when they tell you to adopt the attitude of gratitude? Well, it’s exactly as it sounds. It means you need to appreciate all the things, people, and favorable situations in your life. No matter who you are, it’s highly likely that you have at least a handful of things in your life that you can be thankful for.

In our endless pursuit of large goals and dreams, we often tend to forget all the things we have already been blessed with. Our past achievements and victories can become blur when that happens. This can turn us into ungrateful people. It’s only obvious that you won’t be in the right state of mind as an ungrateful person. This can impact your life in a negative way. So, it’s very important that you instill a gratitude ritual in your life that you can follow every day. Creating a ritual makes the forming of this habit much easier.

Before we discuss what a gratitude ritual looks like and how you can create one, let’s first take a look at some of the most important benefits of gratitude. This may motivate you to stop everything you’re doing and create a ritual at the earliest!

What Are The Benefits?

The list of benefits is as long as the blessings in your life. Take a look and imagine being able to enjoy all of them!

  1. You’ll be much happier.
  2. You’ll live a more fulfilling life.
  3. Your sleep will improve.
  4. Instead of being discontent, you will feel satisfied with what you have.
  5. Your relationships will flourish.

An Example of A Gratitude Ritual

As with any other thing, each person’s gratitude ritual will look completely different from the rest. It depends on your personal preferences, what you’re comfortable with, what you’re not comfortable with, and so on. But we can take a general example of a gratitude ritual so you can have at least some understanding of how you can go about creating one for yourself.

One typical gratitude ritual may be done just before you are going to bed at night. This might also help you wind down and relax better. You can start off by sitting quietly on a comfortable surface with your legs folded and eyes closed. You don’t need to do anything specific. The idea is to just bring yourself to the present moment. Then you can begin doing some breathing exercises to calm your mind further. Deep and slow breathing is ideal in this case.

Once you feel calm enough, you can get up and get your diary out. If you want to make the experience even more pleasant, you can burn some scented candles. It will not only improve the ambiance of your room but will also create a conducive environment where you will be able to focus more on your blessings. Another benefit of doing so is that you will be more motivated to practice gratitude as the experience itself feels really good.

Next, you can sit down on a chair and start writing in your diary. There is no specific format that you have to follow. All you got to do is pour your heart into the diary and don’t hold anything back. You can go over your entire day and remember all the things you loved about it. Mention how it made you feel and that you’re thankful to the universe for it. Once done, you can expand your focus on the other things in your life that you feel really blessed to have. You may have good health, a loving partner, a great job, enough savings in your bank account, healthy parents, and so on. There could be tons of other things to be grateful for. As you’re writing about them, it’s a good idea to also visualize them in your mind.

Once you’re done writing all the things, you can close your diary. It’s better if you could stay in that mental state for a while and just feel good for once. Then, you can go to bed with a smile on your face!

How To Create A Gratitude Ritual?

As mentioned above, your gratitude ritual will depend completely on you. Maybe you would prefer to practice a gratitude ritual at the dinner table with your family. Or maybe you would prefer to sit alone in meditation and picture everything you’re grateful for in your mind. Or, as per the example given above, you might like to write in your gratitude journal. Another cool ritual could involve painting or sketching the things you are grateful for. Of course, this might require some art skills, but if you have them, this could be a fun ritual to practice every day!

It’s okay to not know what exactly your ritual looks like. You might require some experimentation to figure it all out. However, in time, you will be able to craft yourself the perfect ritual and then, you can begin to transform your life for the better, one day at a time!

Just remember that whatever ritual you create, it should be something that you look forward to every day. It should feel soothing and fun, instead of feeling like a chore! That way, you will readily practice it without fail and ultimately, you will be able to enjoy all the benefits mentioned above. But above all, practicing a gratitude ritual will make you happy. And happiness is what we are all really after, isn’t it?
